Boat shows were a key boat-selling tool and
very influential in the boat-buying process. The boating industry
held approximately 200 boat shows annually across the nation.
Research confirmed that almost all recent buyers had attended
at least one boat show and that two-thirds attended one or
more boat shows during the six months prior to purchase.
More than 40 percent of recent
new boat buyers either ordered their boat at a show or bought
it from a dealer they spoke with at a show. Interest level
was gauged by the percentage of people coming through a dealer’s
or manufacturer’s booth at a show and expressing an
interest to buy as well as by the number of boats sold at
the show.
Of specific interest to competition
ski boat manufacturers was the Wakeboard and Waterski Expo,
a trade show for the industry held in September each year
in Orlando, Florida.
While the ski boat industry
and the water-ski industry in general tended to get overlooked
at the large marine trade shows such as the International
Marine Trades Exhibit and Convention, the Wakeboard and Waterski
Expo focused on these two watersport segments.
Manufacturers were able to
network and introduce their new products to dealers and retailers
without getting lost in the crowd.
